Oak City Clogging Crew is based in the Raleigh, NC area and was established on April 18, 2011. Members range in age from twelve to over fifty years old and have been clogging as little as one year to twenty years and greater. The founder and director, Tayler Gentle, aims to provide a family-friendly atmosphere to teach individuals of all skill levels to clog (ages 6 to adult). Traditional and contemporary styles are taught and executed on this team through performances and competitions. Kathy Todd, Oak City’s assistant director has been a member of the team since the beginning. Kathy was the main driving force in the establishment of the crew, pushing Tayler to create a team solely under her direction.
Members of this team are located throughout the entire Piedmont region of North Carolina! In 2015, the team practice location relocated to Louisburg, NC! The team now practices one full Saturday a month. Competition members have access to team instructional videos for additional help when practicing outside of class.
Oak City Clogging Crew debuted competitively in June 2011 and have been actively competing since the start. The team solely competes in America’s Clogging Hall of Fame (ACHF) and attends the yearly ACHF World Championships held in the fall of each year. Some members of the team are additionally involved in the competition circuit and serve as judges and/or committee members. Each year, the entire team contributes to the ACHF community by hosting an annual regional competition, held on the Saturday of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. The competition is located in Louisburg, NC and details can be found under the ‘Oak City’s Winter Invitational’ tab on the website.
As of 2016, the team has already won nearly one hundred awards and have placed numerous times at the ACHF World Championships. In addition to the competition accolades, the team has also performed at multiple events throughout the Piedmont, including weddings, church events, community events, school functions, and talent shows. Oak City Clogging Crew sticks by their motto, “Family, friends, and fun…that’s what clogging is all about!” In addition to clogging at performances and competitions, the team also engages in fun team bonding activities on occasion, which has included concerts, dinners, and team photo shoots.
Tayler chose to form a team because she wishes to share the passion, dedication, and commitment she has for this form of dance with people who have not only wanted to learn to clog, but also wanted to perform and compete with a team based in and around her hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina.
